2022-2023 Virginia's Winter Farmers Markets

Updated: Jan 12

December 2022 - March 2023

Of the 220+ farmers markets in Virginia, 55 markets stay open throughout the winter months. An additional 30 markets are open in December — many for special holiday markets — but do not continue through the winter.

Some of the winter markets adjust their schedules from summer, some move indoors, and some add online sales. And they all continue to be excellent sources of local food and artisan products.

At winter markets you can find high quality Virginia Grown meat, cheese, eggs, honey, and produce, as well as prepared and ready to eat foods, freshly baked breads, and sweet treats. There are hardy greens, winter squashes, apples, sweet potatoes, and other root vegetables. There are grass-fed and pastured meats – such as beef, pork, and chicken. This is the time of year to enjoy slow roasted meats and veggies, stews, chili, and hearty soups. Get out your roasting pan, stew pot, and slow cooker. Soon the aroma coming from your kitchen will be irresistible!

A fun treat during December is the many holiday markets we see across the state hosted by farmers markets. At these markets, the spotlight shifts to Virginia’s artisans with their handmade crafts, prepared food, and baked goods. These vendors will help your holiday events shine! Check your local farmers market’s social media for their holiday market schedule.

Below is a list of Virginia’s year-round/winter markets by region. We have also included a list of the markets that are still open in December — many for special holiday markets. Use the Virginia Farmers Market Trail map to find a market near you – lovevamarkets.org. (The Virginia Farmers Market Trail is also available as a mobile app in the Apple App Store.)
